The Viet Nam Electronic Catch Documentation and Traceability System (eCDT VN) is a crucial electronic system implemented to enhance the traceability of fish and fishery products in Viet Nam, in accordance with Circular 21/2018/TT-BNNPTNT. Driven by the need to meet stringent international market demands for transparency and address the European Commission (EC) recommendations regarding illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, eCDT VN aims to modernize fisheries management and improve product quality. Launched in January 2024 and gradually deployed in coastal provinces in Viet Nam, the eCDT VN involves various stakeholders, including fishing vessels, port authorities, and export companies, through web and mobile applications. The eCDT VN facilitates electronic recording of fishing activities, simplifies port procedures, and enhances the accuracy of origin certifications, offering benefits such as reduced costs, improved efficiency, and increased transparency. Despite facing technological, infrastructural, awareness, human resource, and financial challenges during the initial nationwide implementation phase, eCDT VN represents a significant step forward in the country’s efforts to ensure the sustainability of its fisheries sector, enhance its international reputation, and work towards the removal of the “yellow card” warning of the EC.en
