Abstract

SEAFDEC during July-September has continued taking up its role in supporting sustainable fisheries development and management of the region. After the endorsement of RAC by the SEAFDEC Council early this year, the first RAC Meeting was organized in this quarter with participation of the RAC Standing Members; where several management issues that have implications to fishery activities of the region were discussed, and recommendations were prepared for submission to the SEAFDEC Council for consideration. SEAFDEC also started addressing issues relevant to climate change, in line with the directives and recommendations previously given at the annual meetings of the SEAFDEC Council and Program Committee. The RTC on international fisheries policy issues was organized in July, and the issues on climate change and its impact to fisheries were discussed. The meeting also concluded with the measures to mitigate such possible impacts to fisheries activities of the region. During the quarter, SEAFDEC also launched a new project on Human Resources Development for Food Security and Poverty Alleviation by Fisheries Intervention” with support from the ASEAN Foundation. Under this project, HRD activities, covering various fisheries themes, would be provided by SEAFDEC Departments. Through the implementation of this project, it is envisaged that several training courses would be conducted in the near future, and the linkage and contribution between fisheries and food security/poverty alleviation would be further enhanced.
