The Status of Fisheries in the Republic of Maldives

Abstract
The paper discusses the tuna fisheries in Maldives which dominates its fishing industry. Apart from a very strong domestic market, tuna is also the main export commodity of the country. Moreover, reef fisheries such as, sea cucumber, grouper, shark, and aquarium fishery industries, are also being discussed in the paper. Also presented in the paper are the fisheries management system, and the national development plan of Maldives for fisheries from 1997 too 1999.
