Enrichment of live food with essential fatty acids and vitamin C: effects on milkfish (Chanos chanos) larval performance
(Elsevier, 1998)The effects of essential fatty acids (EFA) and vitamin C-enriched live food on growth, survival, resistance to salinity stress and incidence of deformity in milkfish larvae reared in tanks were investigated. Larvae were ... -
Contribution of natural food and supplemental feed to the gut content of Penaeus monodon Fabricius in a semi-intensive pond system in the Philippines
(Elsevier, 1998)Juvenile Penaeus monodon were stocked in grow-out ponds and fed a compound diet at high rates for 19 weeks under semi-intensive conditions. At three stages of the rearing period (weeks 6, 11 and 16), the gut content of the ... -
Evaluation of leguminous seed meals and leaf meals as plant protein sources in diets for juvenile Penaeus indicus
(Society of Israeli Aquaculture and Marine Biotechnology, 1998)The potential of locally available legumes (white cowpea, Vigna unguiculata, and green mung-bean, Vigna radiata) and leaf meals (papaya, Carica papaya, and cassava, Manihut esculenta) in combination with defatted soybean ... -
Growth and survival of milkfish (Chanos chanos), seabass (Lates calcarifer) and rabbitfish (Siganus guttatus) larvae reared at the same density in different sized tanks
(Society of Israeli Aquaculture and Marine Biotechnology, 1998)Growth and survival of the larvae of milkfish (Chanos chanos), seabass (Lates calcarifer) and rabbitfish (Siganus guttatus) in 40, 200 and 500 liter rearing tanks were evaluated at day 14. Milkfish larvae survived better ... -
Optimal sperm concentration and time for fertilization of the tropical abalone, Haliotis asinina Linné 1758
(Elsevier, 1998)Current interest in the tropical abalone, Haliotis asinina has generated research into seed production and culture techniques. However, there has been no report regarding the optimal sperm concentration for fertilization ... -
Partial replacement of Artemia sp. by the brackishwater cladoceran, Diaphanosoma celebensis (Stingelin), in the larval rearing of sea bass, Lates calcarifer (Bloch)
(Society of Israeli Aquaculture and Marine Biotechnology, 1998)A feed experiment was conducted to test the brackishwater cladoceran, Diaphanosoma celebensis, as a partial or complete substitute for Artemia in the larval rearing of the sea bass, Lates calcarifer. The cladoceran was fed ... -
Effect of aquaculture on world fish supplies
(Nature Publishing Group, 2000)Global production of farmed fish and shellfish has more than doubled in the past 15 years. Many people believe that such growth relieves pressure on ocean fisheries, but the opposite is true for some types of aquaculture. ... -
Experimental infection of kuruma prawn (Penaeus japonicus) with Vibrio penaeicida
(The Society of Israeli Aquaculture and Marine Biotechnology, 1998)To estimate the portal of entry of Vibrio penaeicida in kuruma prawn (Penaeus japonicus), immersion and oral infection experiments were conducted with pre-treated and intact prawns. In immersion challenge, V. penaeicida ... -
Thyroid hormones promote early metamorphosis in grouper (Epinephelus coioides) larvae
(Academic Press, 1998)The response of grouper larvae to the thyroid hormones, thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), was examined. Two-, 3-, and 4-week-old grouper larvae were reared in seawater containing either ... -
Studies on the reproductive biology of the Donkey's ear abalone, Haliotis asinina Linné
(Elsevier, 1998)The sex ratio, initial size at sexual maturity, spawning period, time interval between successive spawnings and fecundity of the Donkey's ear abalone, Haliotis asinina were studied. The sex ratio of wild abalone (>60 ... -
Use of metaldehyde as a molluscicide in semi-commercial and commercial milkfish ponds
(Elsevier, 1998)The effect of metaldehyde on brackish water pond snails, Cerithidea cingulata, was tested in 250 m2 ponds, and in semi-commercial and commercial milkfish ponds. The field trials were conducted at three locations, namely ... -
Molluscicidal activity of tobacco dust against brackishwater pond snails (Cerithidea cingulata Gmelin)
(Elsevier, 1998)Toxicity tests on the effect of tobacco dust against brackishwater pond snails (Cerithidea cingulata Gmelin) of various stages or size ranges were conducted under controlled laboratory conditions. The 72-h LC50 ... -
Fishing cooperatives in Capiz, central Philippines: their importance in managing fishery resources.
(Elsevier, 1998)Fishery cooperatives can co-manage coastal fishery resources, help improve the living conditions of small-scale fishers, and slow down the rapid depletion of these resources. Ten fisherfolk cooperatives in Capiz, central ... -

(Springer Verlag, 1998)Public consciousness about biodiversity and the environment, and their importance for sustainable development is not widespread in the Philippines. This article advocates nonformal environment education through nature ... -
Effect of salinity, dietary lipid source and level on growth of milkfish (Chanos chanos) fry
(Elsevier, 1998)Six semi-purified microparticulate diets containing coconut oil (CO), cod liver oil (CLO), and their 1:1 combination (CO+CLO) at 9% and 18% levels were fed to milkfish fry or late postlarvae in freshwater (0 ‰), brackishwater ... -
