Abstract
Together with China, the countries of Southeast Asia are the world's main producers of farmed aquatic organisms. Considering cultured marine shrimps alone, their production share amounts to some 70% of global production, equalling around 1.4 million ton a year. A review is made of the culture status of shrimps, product quality and its traceability, considering also the major constraints and the future direction for development. It is hoped that this overview of the major issues will provide a sound basis for regional planning and development.
