SEAFDEC Aquaculture Department was established in July 1973. It was mandated to (1) promote, undertake, and coordinate research that is necessary for the development of the aquaculture industry in the region; (2) train experts in aquaculture at various levels, from the researcher down to the technician level; and (3) arrange for the exchange and dissemination of knowledge and information in the field of aquaculture and related activities to meet the needs of SEAFDEC Member-Countries.

After 25 years, SEAFDEC / AQD has achieved the following milestones:

  • Broodstock and hatchery technology for tiger shrimp Penaeus monodon

  • Pond grow-out technology for tiger shrimp Penaeus monodon

  • Broodstock technology for milkfish Chanos chanos

  • Hatchery technology for milkfish Chanos chanos

  • Broodstock and hatchery technology for grouper Epinephelus coioides

  • Broodstock and hatchery technology for catfish Clarias macrocephalus

  • Broodstock and hatchery technology for bighead carp Aristichthys nobilis

  • Broodstock and hatchery technology for mudcrab Scylla serrata

  • Broodstock and hatchery technology for rabbitfish Siganus guttatus
