Growth and fatty acid production of thraustochytrids from Panay mangroves, Philippines
(Mushroom Research Foundation, 2003)Optimization of culture conditions with regard to the combined effects of salinity and temperature on biomass and fatty acid production of four thraustochytrid isolates were undertaken. Two strains of Schizochytrium mangrovei ... -
The Leiognathus aureus complex (Perciformes: Leiognathidae) with the description of a new species
(Ichthyological Society of Japan, 2003)Taxonomic analysis of a group of morphologically similar ponyfishes (Perciformes: Leiognathidae) establishes a complex comprising three valid species: Leiognathus aureus Abe and Haneda, 1972, widely distributed in the ... -
Distribution of an oxytetracycline resistance determinant tet(34) among marine bacterial isolates of a Vibrio species
(Nakanishi Printing Co, 2003)The distribution of tet(34) was examined among oxytetracycline (OTC) resistant Vibrio strains isolated from Japan, Korea and the Philippines. tet(34) was detected in 10 isolates (6 in fish, 4 in seawater) ... -
Tolerance of seahorse Hippocampus kuda (Bleeker) juveniles to various salinities
(Blackwell Publishing, 2003)In line with current conservation efforts, some success in the captive breeding of the seahorse Hippocampus kuda (Teleostei: Syngnathidae) has been achieved. To evaluate the salinity tolerance of these hatchery-bred ... -
Shell marking by artificial feeding of the tropical abalone Haliotis asinina Linne juveniles for sea ranching and stock enhancement
(Blackwell Publishing, 2003)A method of marking abalone (Haliotis asinina Linne) for sea ranching and stock enhancement purposes was developed. Three-month-old abalone juveniles (11.8-mm shell length, 0.28 g) were fed artificial diets for 1, 2, or 3 ... -
Transport of hatchery-reared and wild grouper larvae, Epinephelus sp.
(Elsevier, 2003)Optimum packing conditions for the transport of hatchery-reared and wild grouper larvae were investigated under simulated condition or actual air transport. Simulation of transport motion was done through the use of an ... -
Advanced broodstock diets for the mangrove red snapper and a potential importance of arachidonic acid in eggs and fry
(Springer Verlag, 2003)Mangrove red snapper fed advanced broodstock diets containing squid meal and squid oil exhibited higher hatching rates, cumulative survival and survival activity index than those fed a basal diet or a basal diet supplemented ... -
A practical broodstock diet for the mangrove red snapper, Lutjanus argentimaculatus
(Elsevier, 2003)A practical broodstock diet (39% protein, 8.6% lipid) was formulated for the mangrove red snapper as part of a project to ensure consistent production of good quality eggs and larvae through broodstock nutrition. Reproductive ... -
Reproductive performance in induced and spontaneous spawning of the mangrove red snapper, Lutjanus argentimaculatus: a potential candidate species for sustainable aquaculture
(Blackwell Publishing, 2003)A reliable breeding technique was developed for the mangrove red snapper, Lutjanus argentimaculatus (Forsskal 1775), to help sustain the aquaculture of this immensely popular species in Southeast Asia. Using ... -
Mortality in pond-cultured shrimp Penaeus monodon in the Philippines associated with Vibrio harveyi and white spot syndrome virus
(Japanese Society of Fish Pathology, 2003)Heavy mortalities were observed among pond-cultured Penaeus monodon in the provinces of Bohol, Misamis Occidental, Lanao del Norte and Zamboanga del Sur, Philippines. Vibrio harveyi was isolated purely from the hepatopancreas ... -
Growth and yield of Asian catfish Clarias macrocephalus (Gunther) fed different grow-out diets
(The Society of Israeli Aquaculture and Marine Biotechnology (SIAMB), 2003)Juveniles of the Asian catfish Clarias macrocephalus (3.6±0.17 g; 78.0±0.09 mm) were fed one of four diets: a laboratory-formulated diet of 18.9% (Diet 1) or 34.2% (Diet 2) protein, a com- mercial feed pellet of 28.9% ... -
Dietary P regulates phosphate transporter expression, phosphatase activity, and effluent P partitioning in trout culture
(Springer Verlag, 2003)Phosphate utilization by fish is an important issue because of its critical roles in fish growth and aquatic environmental pollution. High dietary phosphorus (P) levels typically decrease the efficiency of P utilization, ... -
Phosphorus utilization in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fed practical diets and its consequences on effluent phosphorus levels
(Elsevier, 2003)Excessive dietary phosphorous (P) concentrations in effluents from aquaculture present a major environmental problem. We therefore studied the effect of dietary P and vitamin D3 on P utilization by rainbow ... -
Apparent digestibility of selected feedstuffs by mud crab, Scylla serrata
(Elsevier, 2003)A feeding experiment was conducted to determine apparent digestibility coefficients for dry matter (ADMD), crude protein (ACPD), crude fat (ACFD), crude fiber (ACFbD), nitrogen-free extract or NFE (ANFED), and crude ash ... -
Potential of feed pea (Pisum sativum) meal as a protein source in practical diets for milkfish (Chanos chanos Forsskal)
(Elsevier, 2003)A 12-week feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the use of feed pea meal as a dietary protein source for juvenile milkfish. Six isonitrogenous (30% crude protein) and isocaloric (16.5 kJ/g) practical diets were formulated. ... -
Diet development and evaluation for juvenile abalone, Haliotis asinina: animal and plant protein sources
(Elsevier, 2003)Growth studies were conducted to determine the suitability of animal and plant protein sources in the diet of abalone, Haliotis asinina. Juvenile abalone with mean initial weight and shell length of 0.69±0.04 g and 11.4±0.35 ... -
Utilization of feed pea, Pisum sativum, meal as protein source in practical diets for juvenile shrimp, Penaeus monodon
(Elsevier, 2003)The potential of feed pea meal as an alternative protein source to soybean meal in practical diets for the juvenile tiger shrimp, Penaeus monodon, was assessed in several experiments. Six isonitrogenous diets were formulated ... -
Microcystin production during algal bloom occurrence in Laguna de Bay, the Philippines
